Roanoke City Market Square

  • Location: Roanoke, Virginia
  • Architect: City of Roanoke
  • Owner: City of Roanoke
  • Size: 15,000 SF

Since the first registered vendors in 1882, Market Square has been the center of the most iconic events in Roanoke. This 15,000 square foot renovation transformed a parking lot
into a pedestrian plaza with bistro tables, additional vendor space with metal canopies, and collapsible bollards that allow a multitude of different outdoor setup arrangements.
The brick plaza and new walkways provide a noticeably smoother transition among the surrounding galleries, restaurants, and boutiques, and provide a more open, accessible
pathway through downtown.

The challenges included delivering the project with an accelerated schedule in the middle of the winter season and the extensive utility work that required extensive coordination
with the City and utility companies. To maintain the aggressive schedule, MB Contractors removed two feet of snow by hand to enable crews to return to work the next day. The site also falls on an access road that runs directly through the middle of the site, which was kept open for the duration of the project.
