When the 11,330 SF renovation of historic Ebony Club (circa 1920) and Corner Shops began, the existing building had four walls, no roof, and plants growing everywhere.  At project completion, Claude Moore Education Complex is the Roanoke Valley’s first Gold LEED® Certified project and energy consumption is estimated at 35% less than buildings of similar size.  Green features include a planted roof, low VOC paints, formaldehyde-free caulk and adhesive, recycled carpet, solar heated hot water, large-scale rain water harvesting system, waterless urinals, and PVC-free products.  Historic features include restoration of existing mosaic tile at lobby entrance, masonry restoration, historically accurate wood storefront with metal awnings and cornice, preservation of existing mural near amphitheatre stage, reinstallation of the original terra-cotta coping at roof, and refurbishment of the 1940’s wood door at the main entrance to Dr. Claude Moore’s former office.
